2010 Olympic Torch Relay Starts Its 28,000 Mile Journey
The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch relay got off to a start on October 30, 2009 in Victoria, British Colombia.
The site of the BC legislature was chosen as the beginning point for the Olympic flame to begin its 28,000 mile cross country trip that will conclude with the lighting of the Olympic flame on February 12, 2010 in Vancouver to officially open the games. More than 7,000 Canadians gathered under drizzling gray skies from Victoria’s Inner Harbor to the BC legislature as the flame arrived from Greece aboard a Canadian forces C-130 cargo plane.
The arrival of the flame marked the beginning of the journey that will take the flame on a route across Canada and back for the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Winter Olympics on February 12, 2010. The largest relay in history is scheduled to visit over 1,000 communities along its 106-day journey. In addition to the large media presence, in attendance were First Nations representatives, schoolchildren and dignitaries including Prime Minister Stephen Harper, B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell, VANOC officials and the mayors of the host cities of both Vancouver and Whistler.
